The right-wing organization Lahava has added a new dimension to the growing tide of racism in Israel by saying it will issue kashrut (kosher) certificates to businesses that employ only Jews. The organization has already designed the certificate which says, “This is to certify that the business employs Jewish workers and does not employ enemies.”
In response, NIF grantee 12 Heshvan: Promoting Tolerance in an Orthodox Context Executive Director Dr. Gadi Gvaryahu said that his organization will consider issuing certificates of merit to businesses if they employ minorities and foreign workers. He said, “We will remind the Jewish people that the Torah warns us in 36 places to treat the stranger well.”
NIF grantee Ne’emanei Torah Va’Avodah, which promotes democracy in Orthodox Judaism, condemned the move in the Israeli media saying, “Such activities delegitimize Judaism, and disgrace the concept of Hebrew labor.”
Dan Yakir, Legal Advisor of veteran NIF grantee Association for Civil Rights in Israel has asked the State Prosecutors Office to consider whether the Lahava initiative infringes laws about racist incitement and discrimination in hiring employees.
