Take Action with the New Israel Fund

NIF convenes and coordinates with Israeli champions of democracy. When there is an opportunity for global voices to amplify the work of these front-line activists, we put out a call to action. Some of these opportunities, both current and archived, are listed below.

Our actions count. We have put the issue of women’s exclusion front and center on the public agenda. We have protested racism and “price-tag” vigilantism and supported Israeli leaders who take on extremism and exclusion. Sometimes lending your voice is all it takes to contribute to a better Israel.

Racism in Jerusalem? It doesn't have to be this way.

13 May 2015

This Sunday will be Jerusalem Day in Israel. In recent years this holiday has included a "Flag Parade," in which extremists march through Palestinian neighborhoods in and around the Old City. Spitting, shoving, vandalism, and racist chants -- including "death to Arabs" and "the mosque will burn" -- have become part of the event. Meanwhile, Palestinian residents are asked to clear the streets and close their shops.

It's outrageous. And it doesn't have to be this way. NIF supports Israelis who believe in peace and in the value of a shared society. Many Israelis are pushing back to defend a vision of Israel that embraces human rights. Here is your opportunity to join them. Write to Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat -- urge him to ensure that tensions in Jerusalem are not further inflamed.

Stand for Democracy: They're running away from the debate. Don't let them off the hook.

9 Feb 2015

Last week, a series of right-wing Knesset members announced that they are backing out of a high-profile conference about democracy in Israel that they had promised to attend. Their move -- clearly a part of their election-season calculations -- thrust the conference into the headlines. We have an opportunity to send a message about how important Israel's democracy is to supporters of Israel worldwide.

"As long as I am mayor, an Arab school will not be built in Nazareth Illit."

13 August 2013

That's what the mayor of a mixed Jewish-Arab town in Israel told the Knesset Education Committee last month. The Knesset hearing was called to inquire why Nazareth Illit, a town in the Galilee with a 20% Arab population, doesn't have a single school where the 1,900 Arab children who live in the town can study in their native language. Write Education Minister Shai Piron -- implore him to stand up to the extremists and to open a school within Nazareth Illit that meets the needs of the town's Arab population.

Stand Up to Extremism

21 June 2012

NIF a liability for Obama?

07 March 2012

A columnist for the Wall Street Journal -- Bret Stephens -- writes that President Barack Obama’s claim to being pro-Israel is dishonest. His evidence? Long-time Obama advisor David Axelrod is a donor to NIF. Others associated with NIF -- like our former Vice President BettyLu Saltzman -- introduced the president to American Jews at the start of his political career, allegedly giving him a distorted sense of American Jewish values.

Doctors’ Order: Women Should be Seen and Heard!

13 January 2012

The Israel Medical Association did something great. It issued new ethical guidelines this week that prevented its members from speaking at a gynecology conference in which women experts were barred from speaking. In doing so, it sent a clear message that mainstream Israel rejects the denigration of women.

Women Should be Seen and Heard

30 November 2011

Advertisers are caving in to the demands of extremist ultra-Orthodox groups. They’re dropping photos of women from posters and billboards in Jerusalem. As a result, images of women are now conspicuously absent from the city’s streets. Even ballet studios and women’s clothing stores have stopped using photos of women.

Stand up for Israel's Human Rights Organizations

17 July 2011

Yet again, Avigdor Lieberman’s Yisrael Beitenu party is leading the charge to “investigate” Israel’s human rights community. And when that’s accomplished, he wants to radically restrict their funding from other democratic governments – support that is legal and conventional in every Western democracy, including the United States.

Don't Boycott Democracy

11 July 2011

The “boycott bill” criminalizing free speech is only one of many anti-democratic measures that have been introduced in the Knesset. Other measures would cripple human rights organizations, further marginalize Israel’s Arab minority, constrict the right of peaceful protest or hamper an independent judiciary.

Say NO to Loyalty Oaths!

07 October 2010

The New Israel Fund and its family of organizations will be fighting against the proposed loyalty oath together.
