A Message From Daniel Sokatch

Regular readers of this column are well aware of the great challenges to the work of the NIF in Israel today. Over the past year, there has been a lot of focus on our support for Israel’s civil and human rights organizations. This is fine: we are incredibly proud of the role these groups are playing in upholding basic tenets of Israel’s democratic culture. And, let’s face it, these are the groups that are most under fire from those in Israel who would see this culture derailed.

Seder near Sderot Provides Unique Feminist Approach to Passover

More than 60 women came to Kibbutz Beeri near Sderot several days before Passover to participate in a unique feminist Seder. The women, including Orthodox, secular, Reform and Conservative Jews -came from all parts of the country to show solidarity with Israelis in the Negev who are under fire from Gaza.

High Court Prohibits Israeli Government from Expelling Foreign Workers for Becoming Mothers

Just in time for Passover, Israel's High Court of Justice cancelled an Israeli government order requiring foreign workers to leave the country with their babies within three months of giving birth. According to the overturned order, the female workers would have been allowed to retain their work visas only if they returned to their home countries, abandoned their infants, and then returned to Israel.

New Knesset Law Enacted to Rid Israel of Landmines

The Knesset has enacted a new law to rid Israel of non-operational landmines. The legislation was passed by an overwhelming majority following a civil society campaign by Roots of Peace International and Association for Civil Rights in Israel (ACRI).

There are an estimated 1 million non-operational landmines in Israel, the West Bank and the Palestinian held territories, mainly along the pre-1967 borders. One of the most recent victims of the mines was 12 year-old Daniel Yuval, who lost a leg last year during a family trip to the Golan Heights.

Government agrees to implement early childhood mandatory education law in Arab sector

On March 29, the Arab residents of Israel's Triangle region achieved an important step toward greater equality. After years of struggle, the Education Committee of the Knesset demanded that the Ministry of Education implement the 1999 mandatory free education law for preschool children in four towns in the region as well as in Abu Ghosh, near Jerusalem. The original law was passed as a result of a multi-year SHATIL-guided campaign.
