Join us for Part II of the New Israel Fund series that celebrates the emerging generation of bright and innovative activists rising to meet the challenges facing Israeli democracy today:

Change from Within: Law as a Tool for Social Justice

NIF Law Fellows Samar Qudha Tannous and Carmel Pomerantz will explore the aspects of the Israeli judicial system that empower and marginalize Israel’s most vulnerable populations. Moderated by Sandra Coliver of the Open Society Foundation.

Samar Qudha Tannous is a Palestinian Arab-Israeli lawyer, feminist, and human rights activist. Prior to joining the NIF Law Fellowship, Samar worked as a coordinator and moderator at the Women Legal Leaders Program at Itach-Ma’aki - Women Lawyers for Social Justice, a feminist organization comprised of female lawyers aiming to advance social justice for all citizens in Israel.

Carmel Pomerantz specializes in human rights litigation and has argued in the Israeli Supreme Court on issues relating to the Occupation and to freedom of political speech. Prior to joining the NIF Law Fellowship, Carmel was an associate-at-law in the Michael Sfard Law Office. She was part of the legal team of a number of Human Rights NGOs (including Yesh-Din and Ir-Amim) and was involved in the social justice campaign in 2011.

Sandra Coliver is a senior legal officer for the Freedom of Information and Expression Program of the Open Society Justice Initiative. For more than two decades, she has managed or participated in human rights and rule of law programs in Mongolia, Morocco, Southeast Asia, Southern Africa, Rwanda, Russia, and parts of Europe, including three years during which she was based in Bosnia.

A former legislative aide, Idit is NIF's frontline representative, spearheading our progressive agenda in the Knesset, building alliances and speaking for the most marginalized people of Israel.
