The Women Behind Israel’s Social Justice Movemen t:

A Discussion for Women

In Israel\, women are leading the movement for social justice.  Women were i nstrumental in this summer’s tent city protests\, which involved the lar gest demonstrations in the country’s history culminating in the establis hment of a special government commission to address protestor grievances.   Women also head some of Israel’s most prominent civil society organiza tions and progressive political parties. Against this backdrop\, gender se gregation in the Israeli public sphere is growing\, women are paid an aver age of only 62 percent of men's salaries\, and tens of thousands of religi ous women are trapped in unhappy marriages because their husbands will not grant them a divorce. What do these conflicting pictures tell us about th e state of women’s issues in contemporary Israeli society?  Rachel Liel will explore this question and also recount recent successes\, obstacles\ , and next steps in Israel’s women’s rights movement.  < /p>\n

Rachel Liel is the New Israel Fund's Executive Dir ector in Israel.  Prior to her appointment in 2009\, she served as Direct or of SHATIL\, the New Israel Fund Initiative for Social Change\, which pr ovides training and consultancy services for the NGO sector in Israel.  S he joined SHATIL in 1998 as part of a long and distinguished career in pub lic service\, having served as Deputy Director of the Division of Rehabili tation Services in the Labor and Social Affairs Ministry\, and as a Policy Analyst in the Department of Social Policy Planning of the Prime Minister 's Office.
